The Atlanta Falcons confused many around the NFL when they added two potential starting quarterbacks during the 2024 offseason. After signing Kirk Cousins to a lucrative four-year, $180 million contract, the team drafted Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Cousins got off to a hot start before hitting major rough patch at midseason. With Atlanta in danger of blowing a 6-3 start, the team turned to Penix for the final three games of the season. The rookie passed for 775 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, while rushing for another score on the ground.

We recently spoke to Penix about the upcoming 2025 NFL season. The second-year quarterback talked about how his approach now that he’s been named the starter.
“Obviously, as far as getting reps with the first-team guys, you know, that’s definitely a big-time difference that I’ve been going through,” Penix said regarding his offseason approach as the team’s QB1.
The former top-10 pick also expressed confidence in Ryan Neuzil, who’s taking over the starting center job in place of Drew Dalman. Penix worked closely with Neuzil last season and has total faith in him to get the job done in 2025.

“He’s going to ball man,” Penix said of Neuzil. “He’s going to do a great job for us. He’s a very smart player and he has what he needs to have to be able to be successful.”
