Veteran running back and return specialist Nyheim Hines is gearing up for an NFL comeback.
Hines, 28, suffered a torn ACL following a summer jet ski accident that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. After signing a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns last offseason, Hines was never activated during his 21-day return window, causing him to miss all of 2024 as well. The Browns terminated his contract in February.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hines believes his knee has fully healed and is looking to sign with a team in time for training camp. He reportedly visited the Houston Texans earlier this spring, and interest could grow if his health checks out.
Philadelphia may be a potential landing spot. Hines was a fourth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, when Nick Sirianni served as offensive coordinator and carved out a niche role as a dual-threat back. While Hines never eclipsed 400 rushing yards in a single season, he was a consistent contributor in the passing game, recording at least 40 receptions in each of his first four seasons.
Hines also made a substantial impact in the return game, logging 1,832 career yards and four touchdowns across 121 kick/punt returns. As a member of the Buffalo Bills, Hines became the 11th player in NFL history with two kickoff return TDs in the same game in a Week 18 win over the New England Patriots. Britain Covey, the Eagles‘ primary punt returner since 2022, signed with the Rams in free agency.

Despite Hines’ versatility, teams will proceed with caution due to the nature of his injury and his two-year absence from the field. Still, with 81 games of NFL experience and a proven track record, Hines could be a valuable low-risk addition.
“I feel better than I have in years. I’m ready to help someone win,” Hines told reporters close to his camp.
