As rescue efforts throughout the state of Texas continue in the aftermath of severe flooding, the U.S. Coast Guard has been working nonstop.

Of the many heroes who have emerged in the rescue efforts, one Coast Guard swimmer has become a national sensation. Appearing on Good Morning America, Petty Officer Scott Ruskan was interviewed over his efforts to save nearly 200 people, mostly children.

“This is what it’s all about, right? Like, this is why we do the job,” Ruskan told the New York Post. “This is why we take those risks all time. This is why like Coast Guard men and women are risking their lives every day.”

Among the many to see Ruskan’s GMA interview was NFL legend J.J. Watt. The former all-world pass rusher and longtime Texan had just one word to describe Ruskan after seeing his story:

“Hero,” he wrote on X, adding a prayer emoji.

Watt was hardly the only one giving the man tremendous props for the work he’s done.

“Wish we highlighted more of the great, humbled, serving individuals in our country like this man instead of always tearing each other down! Positive stories would lead to more positive energy and mindsets in our society!” one user replied to Watt.

“Holy moly – what a credit to the coast guard! What an incredible heroic act – completely selfless. Sure wish everyone would take a lesson from this young man. Thank you, sir!” wrote another.

“Love his attitude. He was doing his duty and gave credit to the brave kids who battled unthinkable dangers.”

“Get that man a statue!”

There have been far too many tragedies to occur during the flooding in Texas. But the silver lining is that many more tragedies have been averted thanks to the incredible heroics of some brave men and women such as Scott Ruskan.

Once the work is all done, Ruskan plus all of the other volunteers and rescue workers should receive a big reward for their contributions.
