The Lions confirmed on Monday that cornerback Carlton Davis III is going for surgery on his jaw and will be out indefinitely.

Davis III is reported to be out for six weeks.

He sustained the jaw injury in the second quarter of the Lions’ 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Davis III went to wrap up Bills running back Ray Davis, and as the ball carrier rotated his back towards Davis III, contact was made with his chin and he trotted away in ostensible pain.

Davis III had left the game with two total tackles.

The Super Bowl champion’s season is paused with 56 total along with two fumble recoveries and two interceptions for 49 yards.

It’s been a tough day for the Lions as they also confirmed on Monday that defensive lineman Alim McNeil, kick returner and cornerback Khalil Dorsey, and running back David Montgomery are all out to season-ending or potential season-ending injuries.

The injury problems for the Lions are growing so large, that they could almost build a starting defense out of who is out. Some other notable names include All-Pro defensive end Aidan Hutchinson along with linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., linebacker Alex Anzalone, linebacker Derrick Barnes, defensive end Marcus Davenport, defensive tackle Kyle Petko and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu.

The remaining healthy cornerbacks to compensate for the loss of Davis III include Kindle Vildor and Terrion Arnold.

The Lions still lead the ever-competitive NFC North at 12-2 following Sunday’s defeat. The Minnesota Vikings could tie them with a victory on “Monday Night Football” against the Chicago Bears.

The Lions will play the Bears next at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. They slipped by Chicago at home on Thanksgiving Day 23-20.

Detroit will then take on another injury-plagued team who began the year with Super Bowl goals in the San Fransisco 49ers on Dec. 30. This will be a rematch of the NFC Championship in which San Fransisco topped Detroit 34-31.

It will finish off its schedule in what could be an NFC North-deciding game against the Minnesota Vikings on Jan. 5.
