ESPN’s advanced receiver score metric showcases just how good Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver Josh Downs was during the 2024 season.

Using tracking data from NFL Next Gen Stats, this metric evaluates every route a pass catcher runs and scores their performance based on whether or not they got open, if they made the reception, and any YAC that was picked up.

From there, an overall score is generated, and among all wide receivers last season, Downs ranked 15th.

In terms of raw production, Downs was one of the most productive slot receivers in the game in 2024. He was fourth in receptions, fifth in yards, and 12th in YAC, according to PFF.

Regardless of who was under center or the inconsistencies that the Colts were navigating at quarterback, Downs was a go-to presence in the passing game. This was particularly evident on third downs, where he was extremely efficient in those key situations.

Along with Downs, the Colts’ wide receiver unit as a whole ranked well in this advanced metric, with Alec Pierce coming in at 37th and Michael Pittman at 70th.

In Bill Barnwell’s recent skill position rankings, he was very bullish on the potential of the Colts’ wide receivers.

“There’s an underrated trio here,” wrote Barnwell.
