There are 57 days remaining before the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season and 59th year of NFL existence. Under new head coach Kellen Moore, the Saints will open up at home against the Arizona Cardinals. The No. 57 is currently worn by undrafted rookie defender Tyreem Powell. It was most famously worn by Hall of Fame linebacker Rickey Jackson, but most recently donned during the regular season for two games in 2022 by defensive end Christian Ringo. Here’s a closer look at Powell, our Saints Player of the Day, as he steps into the sizeable legacy of No. 57.
Name (age): Tyreem Powell (23)
Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 239 pounds
Relative Athletic Score: 6.03
Drafted: Undrafted in 2025 (New Orleans Saints)
2025 salary cap hit: $843,333
A three-star recruit at Vineland High School, Powell stayed with in-state Rutgers over other more traditional powers. He didn’t play as a freshman, but in 2021 saw significant playing time and by 2022 was a starter. Over his career with the Scarlet Knights, Powell had 5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss among 201 total stops while adding an interception. He missed the end of the 2023 campaign with a broken hand, then tore his Achilles that offseason. Powell would still bounce back in 2024 to play 10 of the 13 Rutgers games and was voted team captain.

Not selected in the draft this spring, Powell was signed to an undrafted contract by New Orleans. A rugged and physical tackling machine, Powell possesses good awareness and an aggressive mentality. In new coordinator Brandon Staley’s largely 3-4 system, Powell projects as an inside linebacker. He’ll compete for a depth spot behind starters Demario Davis and Pete Werner along with fourth round rookie Danny Stutsman.
