Let’s dive into the big question facing the Colts’ quarterback position with training camp near.
The Indianapolis Colts’ rookies will report for training camp on July 21st, the veterans on July 22nd, and the first practice will take place on July 23rd.
So with training camp almost here, we will be taking a position-by-position look at the Colts‘ roster, specifically examining the one big question that faces each unit.
Up first are the quarterbacks.
Can the Colts get the consistency they need from the quarterback position?
I suppose the real big question here is, who will be starting Week 1 for the Colts? But that’s ultimately going to be determined by which quarterback is the most consistent.
“We’re just looking for consistency on a daily basis,” Steichen said earlier this offseason. “I mean, you look around the league, the teams that were in the playoffs, the quarterback play was consistent.”
Both Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson struggled to find that consistency last season. Richardson was benched at one point and completed only 47% of his passes on the season, according to PFF.
Jones, meanwhile, still completed 63.3% of his passes, which was his lowest mark since 2020. He has also thrown 13 interceptions over his last 16 games between the 2023 and 2024 seasons, not to mention that the New York Giants‘ offense struggled to generate explosive passing plays with Jones at quarterback. He was eventually benched and then released last season.
If the Colts can get somewhat steady play from under center, they should find themselves in a lot of games and have the opportunity to stack some wins because of how well built the roster is around the quarterback.
The Colts have what should be another stout offensive line unit. They were also the only team in 2024 to have three wideouts each eclipse 800 receiving yards, while Jonathan Taylor finished fourth in rushing yards.
The defense should be greatly improved as well with the additions of Cam Bynum and Charvarius Ward, along with Lou Anarumo and his more aggressive, disguise-heavy scheme.
Jones will likely enter training camp with the upper hand after taking almost all the first-team reps during OTAs and minicamp–although what took place in late May and early June won’t determine who the Week 1 starter is.
Richardson is optimistic that he will be ready to go at the start of camp after navigating a shoulder injury, but with fewer reps following the offseason, he’ll have to hit the ground running.
