Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is entering his second season as the team’s Commander-in-Chief. It’s not his first head coaching gig; he was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-2020. After departing Atlanta, Quinn spent a few seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys before being hired by the Commanders in 2024.

In his first season with the Commanders, Quinn’s team was far better than anyone anticipated. Jayden Daniels delivered far more than was advertised, and the Commanders made it all the way to the NFC Championship game. Entering his second season with the organization, Quinn was named a “serviceable veteran” in the latest CBS Sports ranking of head coaches.

Few coaches enjoyed such a catapult in stock in 2024. That may be mostly due to Jayden Daniels‘ magical dynamism at quarterback. His coordinator hire of Kliff Kingsbury was part of the equation, though, as was his experience on the playoff stage.

The article grouped the coaches into three tiers: Tier 1 – the cream of the crop, Tier 2 – serviceable veterans, Tier 3 – unproven or underwhelming.

Quinn fell into the middle group of serviceable veterans, which is exactly where he belongs. Except for one thing: The article ranks Kevin Stefanski above Quinn, and that just doesn’t sit right. Stefanski might be a serviceable veteran, but in his six seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, he’s made the postseason twice.

Regardless of CBS Sports’ opinion on this matter, Quinn is set to have a far better season than Stefanski in 2025. And that’s what really matters.
