The New England Patriots keep adding to their defensive line on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. After picking interior lineman Joshua Farmer in the late fourth round, they have added LSU edge Bradyn Swinson in the early fifth.

Let’s grade the pick.

Instant grade: Patriots draft Bradyn Swinson 146th overall

Bernd: Talent-wise there is no question that Swinson is an intriguing player and he would not have made it to the 146th pick in the draft based on his on-field performances alone. So, why did he slide? That is for the teams to answer, but there have been some questions about his maturity during the pre-draft process. Apparently, though, Mike Vrabel and company are not overly concerned about those. | Grade: B+

Brian: Swinson was an athletic edge rusher I thought was flying under the radar in this deep class — and one of my top remaining players on the board entering day three. In an expanded role for the Tigers last year he showed his pass rush ability by ranking top-five in the FBS in pressures with a 22.1 percent pass rush win rate. | Grade: A

Matt: Swinson is a twitched-up edge rusher who was considered a top-100 player by most. Getting him at 146 is an absolute steal for the Patriots. Although he’s an older prospect, he broke out last year with 8.5 sacks and was an impactful player for LSU’s defense. In New England, he should be a rotational edge player who can learn from Harold Landry how to maximize his technique. | Grade: A+

Pat: In my four-round mock draft earlier today, I had the Patriots taking Swinson at No. 106, so I love this value. He brings serious pass rush off the edge and should help the Patriots immediately. The Patriots continue to add to their defense after going all-offense on the first two days. They needed pass rushing help, and they’ve gotten it, in a big way. | Grade: A+

The Patriots’ next draft pick is set to come at No. 171 in the fifth round. Their biggest remaining needs include off-ball linebacker and kicker.
