MACON, Ga. (WGXA) – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) hosted its annual Football Media Day at the Tubman Museum in Macon, bringing together coaches, players, and football fans to preview the upcoming 2025 season. Two programs that drew a lot of attention were Fort Valley State University and Morehouse College — both setting high expectations for the months ahead.
Morehouse head coach and former NFL star Terrance Mathis had one name on his mind: Nick Woodford. The former Northeast High School standout and Macon native committed to Morehouse earlier this year, and his reputation precedes him.
“I went and watched the whole tape and I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me — we got a steal here,’” Mathis said.
Woodford’s high school career was nothing short of historic. He rushed for 6,282 yards and 88 touchdowns, making him the all-time rushing leader in his district. He’s also one of just three players in Georgia high school football history to rush for over 2,600 yards in two different seasons.
Mathis joked about other coaches trying to “trade” for Woodford like it’s the NFL.
“Some of the coaches in the conference already told me, ‘We’ll trade you these guys for Nick Woodford.’ I said, ‘Nope — we got him.’”
But beyond high school success, Mathis sees professional potential in Woodford.
“He’s going to be a great college player. But can he play on Sundays? This young man can play on Sundays.”
Meanwhile, at Fort Valley State University, the Wildcats are preparing for a new era under first-year head coach Marlon Watson. The team finished 6–4 last season, and Watson says his focus goes far beyond the win column.
“Not only winning — but winning the right way,” Watson said. “That means going to class, following the fundamentals, and doing what we as coaches ask you to do.”
That message is resonating with his players. Defensive back Darnell Stephens says academic accountability is just as important as football performance.
“Education plays a role in who you are off the field,” Stephens said. “Are you showing up to class, meetings, and extra study time — not just practice?”
Linebacker Jadyn Walker added that the Wildcats are embracing a 1-0 mindset every day.
“Just focus on winning the day, winning the moment — win the workout, win the conditioning — and we’ll be pleased with the results afterward.”
