SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Former Syracuse football All-American Art Monk will receive the NFL’s ultimate honor – his jersey will be retired by the Washington Commanders in the upcoming 2025 NFL season.
Monk started out as a running back for the Orange in 1976, ultimately switching to a wide receiver. A four-year letterman with the Orange, he was drafted in the first round of the 1980 NFL Draft by the team that was then called the Washington Redskins.
The star receiver found much success in the NFL, racking up several accolades including three Pro Bowl appearances, two All-Pro selections, and five one-thousand yard seasons.
Monk won three Super Bowl championships in Washington between 1982-1991.
Monk retired after the 1995 season and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
The Washington Commanders will have the retirement ceremony on November 2nd during their Sunday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Syracuse alum will have his No. 81 celebrated with greats such as Sammy Baugh and Sean Taylor, cementing his impressive legacy in football.
