WASHINGTON (7News) — It’s training camp time for the Washington Commanders, with rookies reporting Friday and veterans joining them July 22.

Before then, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Commanders, including some fresh faces and offseason departures.

Key Newcomers: Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, Javon Kinlaw, Josh Conerly Jr.

General Manager Adam Peters made some splashy additions to his roster.

Former San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel has garnered the most attention — and for good reason. The 29-year-old is an explosive wideout who should add a new wrinkle to Washington’s offense.

Samuel totaled 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns in 2024, all bottom three figures of his career. But with Terry McLaurin holding out for a new contract and the receiver room wide open, Samuel could have the opportunity to rack up big numbers alongside second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly Jr. were two key additions to the Commanders’ offensive line.

Tunsil, acquired in a surprise trade with the Houston Texans, will protect Daniels’ blind side from the left tackle position. Conerly, a first-round pick from Oregon, could start at right tackle or split reps with a veteran like Andrew Wylie.

Peters addressed the present and the future with those moves. Tunsil’s experience should be a huge boost for Daniels this season, while Conerly can grow alongside the young signal caller and become a fixture of this team down the road.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kinlaw was undoubtedly the biggest addition. The 27-year-old signed a $45 million contract with $30 million guaranteed and is expected to play a major role at defensive tackle.

Some felt Kinlaw’s contract was a bit expensive, so it remains to be seen how that deal pans out. But nonetheless, he will be a key part of Washington’s defense.

Key Departures: Jonathan Allen, Jeremy Chinn, Dyami Brown, Benjamin St-Juste

Washington brought in Kinlaw after the departure of longtime defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who signed a 3-year, $51 million contract with the Vikings.

Peters chose not to re-up with Allen, who’s been with the Commanders since they drafted him in 2017, due to his hefty price tag and age (30). We’ll soon find out if that was the right swap.

Safety Jeremy Chinn signed with the Las Vegas Raiders after just a year in D.C. Washington will have to make up for his production after he ranked second on the team in total tackles (117) and fourth in tackles for loss (seven).

Peters tabbed former New Orleans Saint Will Harris as his replacement. The 29-year-old signed a two-year, $8 million contract and should slot into that starting safety spot.

Washington didn’t lose many other major pieces — wide receiver Dyami Brown signed with the Jaguars, and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste departed for the Los Angeles Chargers. Peters brought in wide receiver Michael Gallup and cornerback Jonathan Jones to fill those voids.

Washington is hoping its offseason moves, paired with an already-established nucleus, can recreate some of last season’s magic and more.
