The Detroit Lions opened the door for a roster move Wednesday following the official retirement of longtime center Frank Ragnow.
Ragnow announced his retirement in June, but it didn’t become official in the Lions’ books until now. The transaction made room for one player to be added to the 90-man roster ahead of the start of training camp.

The team also released cornerback Divaad Wilson, who had been placed on injured reserve. The Lions signed Wilson in June, but he was placed on IR soon after.
Wilson’s presence didn’t count against the team’s 90-man roster number, but Ragnow’s removal will be key for the coming cuts as training camp gets underway. Rookies reported on Wednesday and the rest of the team will get to camp on Saturday.
The open spot could prove crucial to a player trying to make it through cuts down the road. The active roster will have to be cut to 53 players before the start of the season, at which point practice squad spots will become available.
