A little more than a week following the 2025 NFL draft, the New York Giants have received plenty of praise regarding their class. Although general manager Joe Schoen’s strong rookie selections were headlined by first-round picks, Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart, they continued to add talented players after Round 1.
Schoen, of course, had his strongest draft class in 2024 after an impressive year for many of the Giants rookies last season. He will hope to have back-to-back strong classes with the selections he made last week.
One of the players that has fans excited to put on Giants’ blue is fourth-round running back Cam Skattebo out of Arizona State. Skattebo was linked to the Giants before the draft and some were surprised he was available for the Giants at pick No. 105.
CBS Sports has released a list of each team’s most questionable pick from the 2025 NFL draft and Skattebo was the pick for the Giants.
Skattebo is good in short-yardage situations because his determination will carry him across the threshold but there are questions about his top-end speed. Can he be more than a role player? Given that there were some really talented running backs still on the board, I would have gone in another direction. Overall, I thought New York had a good draft.
This is the second consecutive draft in which the Giants took a running back following the departure of Saquon Barkley. Although Tyrone Tracy was one of the best players and biggest surprises from the 2024 rookie class for Big Blue, Skattebo will offer a much different type of back than Tracy.
Given Skattebo’s physical style at the position, he should be a nice compliment to Tracy, offering a bruising short-yardage back.
The combination of Tracy and Skattebo should resemble the Giants’ new version of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, a duo that had a ton of success after being drafted two years apart.
Clearly, Schoen had a plan to move more toward a running back by committee than the bell-cow running back system they had with Barkley. He saw value in Skattebo that extended beyond just being a role player with Big Blue and if Skettabo is good, the Giants will have a two-running back core for years to come.
