Jakob Weatherspoon, a four-star defensive back, has been committed to Ohio State. However, in a surprising move, he’s flipped his commitment to North Carolina.
Recruiting insiders are pretty shocked.
Weatherspoon, an Ohio native, was previously extremely loyal to his home state. He said he loved the program led by Ryan Day.
“I love the coaching staff. They’re all great dudes,” Weatherspoon previously told Bucknuts. “And it seems like they think highly of me, coach (Tim) Walt(on) and coach (Gerren) DuHart are in touch every day.”

247Sports had more on his decision:
Weatherspoon announced his commitment to the Scarlet and Gray on January 2, 2025, just a day after Ohio State defeated Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal on the way to winning the program’s ninth national championship. The safety received a scholarship offer from the Tar Heels a month and a half later and quickly considered a visit to Chapel Hill. Weatherspoon took an official visit to North Carolina the weekend of June 6, but also had an official visit with the Buckeyes just before the college football recruiting dead period began at the end of June.
A native of Avon, Ohio, Weatherspoon is a four-star prospect in the latest 247Sports rankings, which were updated on Thursday. The 5-foot-10, 172-pound Weatherspoon is ranked as the No. 19 safety, the No. 233 overall prospect, and the No. 10 player in Ohio in the 2026 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports rankings. In the 247Sports Composite, Weatherspoon is ranked as the No. 14 safety, the No. 178 player, and the No. 9 prospect from his home state.
It’s a huge get for North Carolina – and a massive blow to Ohio State.
It’s a blow to the Buckeyes, though Ryan Day’s program will ultimately be fine.
