VINCENT, Ohio (WTAP) – On July 17th, The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) announced the association will now be sanctioning a state championship for girls flag football.
According to the press release by the OHSAA, flag football has been installed to 100 college club and varsity programs, along with 17 high school athletic associations sanctioning the sport with a state title.
Steve Harold, the athletic director for Warren High School, said the sport could be potentially popular for female students as they run some flag football games in the fall.
“We do some events here with our girls in the fall with flag football and it has been super popular,” Harold said. “Each class form teams and it is a super-popular event.”
Jeff Totten, a representative with Youth Empowered NFL Flag, said in a statement that is exciting to hear this news.
“Anytime opportunities can be presented to athletes that allow them to compete in sanctioned events is a great thing,” Totten said. “In our inaugural season, we only had 5 female participants. This past season, we had nearly 30.”
Harold added the sport is non-contact, so it won’t cause harm to those who want to participate.
“It’s fully non-contact, so it’s not something that a girl’s going to be physically beat up in,” Harold added. “This is more of a non-contact sport. Speed would be a factor, I would think, of course, in this sport. ”I think there’ll be some interest in this. There could be a push for us to possibly get involved with and start a team.“
