Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany are set to invest $52 million along with their Kansas City Current co-owners to boost facilities.

Mahomes is enjoying his offseason and returning to practice with the Kansas City Chiefs, whose 2024 season ended at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at the Superdome. The Eagles ended the Chiefs’ hopes of an unprecedented three-peat thanks to a dominant defensive performance that overwhelmed Mahomes and the offense. The quarterback was sacked six times and threw a costly pick-six in the 40-22 loss.

Since 2018, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to seven consecutive AFC Championship Games and five Super Bowl appearances. However, he is also excelling off the field through various sports and business ventures.

Mahomes’ wife Brittany is a founding co-owner of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current along with Chris and Angiel Long. The 29-year-old then became a co-owner in January 2023.

The Current is the second-most valuable franchise in the NWSL, and after generating a league-high $36 million in revenue in 2024, the team is looking toward the future. Earlier this week, Kansas City made another expansion announcement.

On Thursday, the Current broke ground on a three-tiered expansion in Riverside, Missouri. The franchise is building Riverside Stadium, The Performance Center, and Pitch Expansion, representing a $52 million investment.

Mahomes and Brittany shared the exciting news on social media. The 2,000-seat Riverside Stadium will demonstrate “a FIFA-certified, heated grass pitch and gan amenities,” with one eye on hosting a base camp for teams at the 2026 World Cup.

The 35,000-square-foot modern performance facility and four new youth soccer pitches will be built next to their current facility. The Long family is also constructing a hotel in the area that they plan to open before the 2026 World Cup next summer.

Speaking to ESPN, Long said: “We’ve hosted so many tours of countries and federations, and it’s been really exciting for the team just to honestly get exposure to a lot of different people and approaches.”

He added: “People love the fact that we have our front office space and our team location in a seamless fashion. A lot of places have their training facility and their front office is elsewhere. So, the ability to have everyone from XYZ country in the same spot.”

Long also reserved part of the land to build a facility for a future WNBA expansion franchise, outlining: “We think that will happen at some point.”

With the WNBA booming, expansion slots are competitive. The WNBA recently announced that new expansion teams in Toronto, Canada, and Portland, Oregon, will join for the 2026 season, while new teams are headed toward Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030.

Mahomes is determined to bring more sports to Kansas City, and he is eyeing the WNBA. Ahead of the Super Bowl, Mahomes said: “You see how Kansas City has embraced all sports that have been in the city, especially women’s sports. I’ve seen it firsthand with the Kansas City Current. I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night.

“That’s just the kind of atmosphere that we have in Kansas City. I’m hoping we can get that done and we can continue to push women’s sports forward.”
