CINCINNATI (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER) -Shemar Stewart and the Cincinnati Bengals were unable to reach an agreement on a contract before the rookie report date, a source tells our media partners at the Cincinnati Enquirer. There was no progress between the team and Stewart’s representation this week.
Stewart is the only first-round pick from this year’s draft class to have not signed his contract. The Bengals and Stewart remain at odds over a disagreement in the language of his contract pertaining to future guarantees. Due to NFL rules, Stewart can’t report for training camp without a signed contract.
Cincinnati’s second-round pick Demetrius Knight and the team reached an agreement on a contract on Saturday morning, according to Jordan Schultz. Knight’s contract has a new clause the Bengals want to put in Stewart’s contract to which he’s opposed.
The Bengals are giving Knight 75 percent of his signing bonus upon signing and have yet to offer that percentage to Stewart, according to a source. This is problematic for negotiations with Stewart as he will be unwilling to accept a contract in which the signing bonus terms are more favorable for the team’s second-round pick than his.
The Bengals start training camp on July 23, and without any progress between the player and team in the next few days, it’s looking like Cincinnati will be without their first-round pick on the first day of practice.
