With the Carolina Panthers set to report to training camp this week, it’s time to take a look at the lay of the land.

Which players are sure to make it through the summer and onto the team’s initial 53-man roster? Are there any wild-card candidates who can leave a lasting impression in the coming weeks? And which battles are worth keeping an eye on?

Here is our training camp preview for the Panthers’ quarterback position:

Roster locks

After an underwhelming first season and a horrendous start to his second, Young rose from a shocking early-season benching to solidify his status at the top of the depth chart. He’ll look to instill further confidence as Carolina’s franchise quarterback following an impressive 10-game stretch that ended the 2024 campaign.

Dalton, who made five starts in place of Young, is back for a 15th NFL season. The 37-year-old should, once again, give the Panthers a solid floor at the position.

On the bubble

Plummer has carved himself a nice little spot on the team. He signed on as an undrafted free agent in the spring, found his way to the practice squad by the end of the summer and even earned a December call-up to the active roster.

Garbers, also an undrafted free-agent signee, will look to follow a similar path. The 22-year-old started in 11 games for the UCLA Bruins during his redshirt senior season—passing for 2,727 yards, 16 touchdowns and a Big Ten-high 11 interceptions.

Battle to watch

Jack Plummer vs. Ethan Garbers

It’s unlikely that the Panthers will carry a third quarterback onto their initial 53-man roster. So Plummer and Garbers could be battling for a spot on the practice squad.

If head coach Dave Canales and his staff decide to move forward with just one of the two, Plummer has the edge given experience in the system. But if Carolina has room to develop both off to the side, then Garbers might be able to stick on with a solid showing this summer.
