We will preview every player on the Cardinals roster leading up to training camp. This is about OL Royce Newman.
The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook.
Next up is offensive lineman Royce Newman.
Royce Newman background, 2024 season
Newman is in his first season with the Cardinals but is in his fifth year in the NFL. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers, where he spent the first three years of his career.
As a rookie, he started 16 games at right guard. He started six in 2022 and two in 2023.
He was waived after the 2024 preseason and claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last year, he was inactive for nine games, active for eight and played in only one, logging only three offensive snaps all season.
Royce Newman 2025 contract details, cap hit
Newman signed a one-year contract for 2025 in March worth nearly $1.34 million. He got $45,000 to sign, $45,000 to participate in the offseason program and can make up to $77,500 in per-game roster bonuses. HIs cap hit in 2025 will be just less than $1.2 million.
Questions he faces, roster outlook
Was Newman a one-year wonder? His role has declined each year since his rookie season. But he has starting experience, which would be good for the Cardinals to have on the bench.
The starting lineup is mostly set, but Newman is on the roster bubble. He could end up being the Cardinals’ primary backup guard.
