As the Chicago Bears prepare for training camp, one of their best players remains out of action, and the team may still be looking for help at wide receiver.

Also, could the Bears have gone in a different direction than Caleb Williams in the 2024 draft?

Here is a sampling of the latest rumors and news surrounding the Bears this week.

-With training camp practices set to begin on Wednesday, the Bears still have one very high-profile name on their Active/Non-Football Injury list.

That player is cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who is coming off his second consecutive Pro Bowl season with the Bears.

In 17 games last season, Johnson had a pair of interceptions and eight passes defended, with seven tackles for loss to his credit, a career high.

There’s been no word on what injury Johnson would be dealing with, and all eyes will be on the star cornerback as the start of training camp nears.

Tyrique Stevenson and Kyler Gordon would likely see increased responsibilities if Johnson is absent, with rookie corner Zah Frazier and Terrell Smith also in the mix.

-According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver DJ Chark is looking for a new team, and he recently visited the Bears before training camp.

The Bears have made several moves at wide receiver already during the offseason, drafting Missouri wideout Luther Burden III in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft and signing free agent wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus, who spent the 2024 campaign with the Washington Commanders.

They also brought in wide receiver Devin Duvernay, who spent 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chark has bounced around the last few seasons, including spending the 2022 campaign with head coach Ben Johnson with the Detroit Lions. In seven games last season, Chark had four catches for 31 yards and a touchdown.

-Backup Bears quarterback Case Keenum has passed his physical with the Bears and has been activated from the Non-Football Injury list, the team said.

In all likelihood Keenum will compete with Tyson Bagent for the No. 2 job this summer behind Caleb Williams, and he’s now been activated ahead of the team’s first training camp practice on Wednesday.

-Speaking of quarterbacks, another interesting wrinkle was reported this week about the Bears’ thinking related to their selection of Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft.

According to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, the Bears were strongly considering taking Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy with the No. 1 overall selection in 2024 before drafting Williams.

McCarthy missed the entire 2024 season with the Vikings due to a meniscus injury, but is aiming to grab the reins as the team’s starter for the 2025 campaign. In fact, McCarthy and the Vikings will travel to Soldier Field for a Week 1 showdown on Monday Night Football to kick off the regular season.
