OXNARD, California (KLTV) – Brian Schottenheimer is the new coach on the block, but not new in experience. The Cowboys’ head coach has a resume loaded with NFL experience, just not one as a head coach…until now.
“This is going to be exciting to see what a man that spent 30 years grew up in this game never had a chance to head coach. And has got some of the finest, highest paid athletes in the world, to step out here and go to war with. I am excited about that and I’m proud-that he’s getting this opportunity. And he deserves it,” said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Schotty, as he’s called, is the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, a highly successful coach that included stops in Cleveland and Kansas City. As a kid, the new Cowboys coach said hs pop always talked about winning a Super Bowl, but it never happened. So he’s comfortable saying “when, not if.”
“When we win a Super Bowl, my dad will get a ring. I can promise you that. But you know, look, this is something where I grew up with a father that there was one goal. And he was very open talking about Super Bowls, and winning a world championship. He never did. It does not change his legacy and how good of a coach he was and the type of impact he had on people’s lives. These guys over here, they have Super Bowl. They won those. I don’t have one.”
Tuesday is the first day of his being a head coach, molding his first team at a training camp. And much like those of his father, those practices won’t be soft.
