The NFL season is set to kickoff in September, college football a little earlier at the end of August, and young football fans in the Santa Maria area have the opportunity for their own six-week recreational flag football season in October.
Area youth, ages 8 to 14, are invited to register now for the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department’s upcoming NFL FLAG Football League season.
The non-contact, recreational league features a six-game season designed to promote skill development, teamwork, and fun in a safe structured environment.
The registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 28, with league play scheduled to begin on Saturday, Oct. 11.
NFL FLAG follows a 5-on-5 format in which players remove flags from the ball carrier instead of tackling. Co-ed divisions are available for ages 8 to 9, 10 to 11, and 12 to 14.

The program fee is $42 for city residents and $53 for non-city residents, and includes an official NFL FLAG team jersey, mouthguard and flag belt.
Walk-in registrations are also accepted at the Recreation and Parks Department administrative office, located at 615 S. McClelland St.
Recruitment for volunteer coaches is also currently underway.
