WATCH: Breaking down Del Conte’s town hall, impact on Texas football
Cedric Golden and Kirk Bohls discuss Chris Del Conte’s town hall, the NFL Scouting Combine, Texas hoops and baseball in the On Second Thought podcast.
Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian covets speed. So it’s wasn’t surprising when they offered DeSoto athlete Myson Johnson-Cook; the No. 4-ranked prospect in the Class of 2027 according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings. His overwhelming athleticism was a key cog in the Eagles path to the 6A UIL state track and field meet.
Johnson-Cook showed up on the 40-Acres Saturday as the final leg of the 4×100-meter relay, his blazing speed led the Eagles to a second place finish and a personal record of 40.15 seconds. He and his team also ran the 4×200-meter relay, ending in fourth and earning a time of 1:24.70.
“I’m very proud of the team. Before the season started nobody expected us to go to state or to run a 40-point low,” Johnson-Cook said.
After the event, Johnson-Cook told the American-Statesman that he has plans to meet Sunday morning with Longhorns running back coach Chad Scott for a campus tour. For now, it’s too early to tell if the athlete is leaning towards joining Texas. But the rising junior hopes he and the Longhorns’ relationship reaches a point where he seriously considers committing.
On the gridiron, DeSoto uses the athlete mostly as a running back. He rushed for 911 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 10.4 yards per carry this past season. And though he has state speed, he measures in at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, a good bit bulkier than the average track star.
