The Chicago Bears‘ running back room consists of D’Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson and seventh-round rookie Kyle Monangai. While it’s a good trio, they would be even better with one upgrade.

At this point, the 2025 NFL draft and the heavy-hitting free agents are in the past. But there are still a few good players available, but they come with some risk. One of those players is former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb.

Drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft, Chubb has spent his entire NFL career with the Browns. In his rookie year, he wasn’t a Pro Bowler yet, but he was still just four yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards. Chubb was then a four-time Pro Bowler and one of the best backs in the league from 2019-2022, before he got hurt.

That’s where the risk comes in if you’re a team looking to sign him. Chubb played just two games in 2023 and eight in 2024. Now, it seems like he’s healthy and ready to go for 2025. There is a risk of injury at this stage, but there is also the ceiling of a high-end running back for at least a few more years.

If the Bears signed him to a fair value contract, he’d make the team much more lethal in the run game, as long as he can stay healthy. It would dramatically reduce the role of Roschon Johnson, but they need all hands on deck to get the ground game going.

Opening up the rushing attack would make things much easier on quarterback Caleb Williams in terms of the passing game and leading the offense. With the offensive line much improved, all of this could look much better than we saw in 2024.

New head coach Ben Johnson has had a ton of success with multiple running backs in his offense. Some of that genius may make players want to come play for the Bears now that he’s running the show.

If Chubb is willing to come to Chicago, they should be all over a move like that. The more depth you have, the more you’ll be able to rotate everyone in and get the most out of them.
