ASHBURN, Va. (7News) — It’s the eve of Washington Commanders training camp.
There’s excitement. There’s a buzz. But, there are also plenty of distractions going on right now with the team.
First, over the weekend, President Donald Trump made his thoughts known about the team name and stadium.

Then, on the football field, fans are very concerned about the contract situation of Terry McLaurin.
The star wide receiver wants a contract extension. The team wants to do what’s best for a sustainable future with the salary cap.
On Tuesday, Commanders GM Adam Peters broke his silence on the standoff.
“Without a doubt, everybody in this building values Terry very much,” Peters said. “We knew that coming in, and we knew that even more after spending a year with him. We’ve had some conversations recently, and we’ll look to have some more conversations. We’re going to do everything we can in order to get a deal done.”
McLaurin is entering the final year of his contract. He turns 30 in September and is likely wanting a salary of around $30 million per season.
If McLaurin decides to hold out, he could be fined $50,000 a day. If he holds in, which is basically reporting to the facility, but sits out practice, it would be up to the Commanders to figure out what they want to do.
“We’re dealing with Terry, a really good player, a really good person,” Peters said. “So it’s really understanding that, never losing sight of that. Making sure every conversation we have is very straightforward, honest, and in good faith. Keeping that mindset throughout, because there’s going to be twists and turns. Just have that confidence and understanding our goal is to get a long-term deal done. Just keep focused on that. Whatever happens along the way, just understand that he’s a great player and we want to keep him here.”
McLaurin has gone over 1,000 yards in each of the last five seasons and has not missed a game since 2020. With Jayden Daniels at quarterback last season, he produced a new career-high 13 touchdowns.
