Why 49ers QB Brock Purdy focused on improving mobility, arm angles in offseason originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Brock Purdy had a productive offseason, to say the least.
The 49ers quarterback not only signed a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension and became neighbors with tight end George Kittle in Nashville, TN., but worked to take his game to the next level in his second healthy offseason as San Francisco’s starter.

Purdy spoke to reporters on Tuesday at 49ers training camp, where he was asked if there was anything specific he wanted to focus on improving this offseason.
“Honestly, just continue to work on my mobility and stuff,” Purdy said. “I feel like I’m somewhat more of a stiff quarterback. That’s not a bad thing, but something I always try and work on is my arm and mobility with that and keeping it stretched out and stuff.
“But outside of that it’s more so making sure I’m on top of my mechanics when throwing to the sideline, [the] deep ball, some running things and making sure I’m in shape with my legs. Those are all little things that I just try and hone in on.”
Purdy already is one of the more elusive quarterbacks in the league with what he can do with his legs, recording 66 carries for 323 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in 2024, but increasing his mobility in his arm and upper body will help him make more difficult throws from inside and outside the pocket.

“Just mobility-wise, like my arm and stuff, I feel like I’m a compact quarterback,” Purdy added. “Just making sure I’m stretching and not be loose-loose or anything but a guy who can make certain arm angle throws and stuff like that. So working on that.”
Improving his mobility from different arm angles would help Purdy avoid having his passes batted down at the line of scrimmage, which he has struggled with at times over the years.
If he could take a page out of NFC West rival and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford’s book, it’s that an effective sidearm pass can be lethal against opposing defenses.
