WASHINGTON (7News) — Washington Commanders training camp officially kicked off Tuesday in Ashburn, but the buzz around the team extends far beyond the practice field.

President Donald Trump’s recent comments threatening to block a new stadium deal unless the team reverts to its old name are sparking renewed controversy—just as players report and fans gear up for a slate of open practices.

The name debate, which many thought was settled, was reignited this week when President Trump posted on social media that the team should change back to the “Redskins”—a name widely criticized as offensive to Native Americans. The president tied the remark to the team’s future stadium plans in D.C., a proposal currently under negotiation with local leaders.

Despite the national attention, Commanders General Manager Adam Peters said Tuesday that the issue isn’t affecting the team’s focus.

“In terms of anything whether it’s the stadium or anything else, they don’t really make it to us,” Peters said at a press conference alongside new Head Coach Dan Quinn. “So we really just try to focus on what’s going on in here and getting ready for the season.”

Commanders Owner Josh Harris has previously said the team has no intention of returning to the old name, calling “Commanders” a reflection of the team’s future and culture.

Another major storyline entering camp is the contract status of star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The fan-favorite playmaker, coming off a career-high 13-touchdown season, is entering the final year of his deal. McLaurin is reportedly seeking a new contract in the range of $30 million per year. Whether McLaurin participates in full practices—or “holds in” by reporting but sitting out—could become clear in the coming days.

“Without a doubt, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much,” said GM Adam Peters. “We’ve had conversations recently, and we will look to have more. We are going to do everything we can in order to get a deal done.”

If McLaurin does not participate, he could face daily fines under league rules. But a “hold-in” would fall into a more uncertain gray area, as long as he is present.

Despite the off-field noise, the team is offering a packed training camp experience for fans over the next few weeks at the OrthoVirginia Training Center in Ashburn.
