Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith signed a $94 million extension with a $70 million guarantee last week on the July 15th deadline. The new extension replaced the franchise tag he signed at the start of the offseason.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Smith labeled the initial tagging as ‘a tremendous honor’ and provided a teary-eyed response about becoming the league’s highest-paid offensive guard.

“I lost my mom when I was 15. I made two promises to her: That I would get my degree and play in the NFL,” said an emotional Smith at the podium. “I didn’t promise her I’d be the highest paid, but I made a promise, man. My parents sacrificed so much for me to be here. So much. To have that moment with them, it’s special, bro. Special. It’s something I won’t take for granted.”

The 2024 Pro Bowler is focused on building on his breakout season, especially with business handled regarding his new contract extension.
