Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Princely Umanmielen has received the message.

The 23-year-old rookie put the exclamation point on Wednesday’s opening session of training camp, when he nicked the arm of quarterback Bryce Young for a strip-sack. That play, although encouraging for the third-round pass rusher, was a bit too physical for head coach Dave Canales—who ended practice at that point to preserve the health of his players.

Shortly after the outing, Umanmielen hit Twitter/X to confirm that he now understands the assignment . . .

Young himself didn’t seem bothered by Umanmielen’s effort.

“That’s competition. It’s football,” he told reporters following practice. “Obviously, there’s some etiquette stuff in football. But young guy, gettin’ after his first day out here in training camp. And shoot, we wanna see those plays on Sunday.

“He’s a competitor, we’re all competitors. We wanna be getting each other better. Obviously, we wanna take care of each other in practice and all that. But I love what he’s doing, I love what he stands for. He’s on my team at the end of the day.”

So perhaps Young, with the help of all of his teammates, will finish the summer a lot cleaner than how he just started it.
