RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks opened training camp Wednesday at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, taking the field in front of their fans for the first time this season with renewed energy and a clear focus: progress.

“It’s an awesome atmosphere, man,” head coach Mike Macdonald said. “I’ll tell you what, I’ll put our training camp atmosphere, the 12s, all the above — it’s just second to none. Really blessed to be out here with the guys, great spirits, locked in. It’s the first day back, so there’s some things we’re working through, but we’re really optimistic.”

Macdonald, entering his second season as head coach in Seattle, said — in typical coach fashion — that he was most excited to see growth from his players following offseason work.

“I think it’s fun to see the progress come from the spring,” he said. “The guys are on it, the intent’s there. Us as coaches, it’s like, ‘Hey, let’s point out the things where we want to grow from day to day.’ It’s great to have the guys back — we missed ’em.”

That growth mindset comes after Macdonald led the Seahawks to a 10-7 finish in 2024, just shy of making the playoffs in his first year at the helm. He said he’s approaching Year Two with the intent to learn from those mistakes and lead a more complete season.

“Second time around, I think it’s the same message as the rest of the team,” he said. “If you don’t have the mentality of, ‘Hey, let’s assess where we were, what we were thinking, why we were doing the things, how we can learn, how we can grow’ — I’m right there with the guys. Really exciting, but a lot of growth.”

The Seahawks are looking to take a step forward in 2025 after several major offseason moves, including bringing in quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Cooper Kupp, while trading away star WR DK Metcalf and quarterback Geno Smith.

Seattle’s first preseason game is set for Aug. 7 at Lumen Field, where the Seahawks will host the Las Vegas Raiders — now led by former Seattle head coach Pete Carroll and Smith.
