Just as we expected, it was rookie quarterback Tyler Shough leading the first-string New Orleans Saints offense on the second day of training camp. Spencer Rattler got the first-team reps on Wednesday to open camp, but it was Shough’s turn on Thursday. After practice, head coach Kellen Moore said Jake Haener’s time with the ones would come soon, too.

And it was Shough who threw the day’s only touchdown pass in team drills. Now, sure, that doesn’t mean everything went well. He and Rattler combined for a single scoring throw in 11-on-11s. That’s not a very encouraging sign for the offense even if it’s early. But that doesn’t mean we should undercut it when Shough does something welll.

It was a good play. Shough saw the defense showing a blitz before the snap, so he checked into a different play. That sent Shaheed on a crossing route against Alontae Taylor — and Shough threw the scoring pass while dropping back from pressure. Here’s the video from Fox 8’s Juan Kincaid:

Shough reflected on his first two days of practice (and the scoring play) during an interview with Kincaid and Sean Fazende for Fox 8 after practice:

We’ll need to see more of it in the weeks ahead. If Shough is going to win this starting job, he needs to make plays with pressure in his face. He needs to do it over and over again to prove he’s the best candidate for the job. This was an encouraging moment. Now let’s see him build on it.
