SANTA CLARA — Before being drafted by the 49ers, Mykel Williams never sought advice from an offensive lineman. But much like star 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa, the 2025 first-round pick’s bonding with Trent Williams already has begun.
“Mykel is a huge dude, man,” Trent Williams said of the rookie on Thursday. “You generally don’t see guys that size on the edge. It sucks having to base block guys whose arms are long as your legs, but I think he has a chance to be a really good player in the NFL.”
The linemen spent part of the offseason together in Cabo San Lucas, after the rookie asked the future Pro Football Hall of Famer if he could borrow his private jet for transportation. It turns out that the left tackle himself was planning a vacation at the same time, and offered to provide a ride to his new teammate.
The two spent time getting to know each other during their excursion to Cabo and again, now that training camp has begun. The elder Williams had a familiar comparison for the rookie’s physique.
“Size-wise, he puts you in the mind of a young DeForest Buckner,” Williams said. “But obviously he’s a little more slight in the frame and can play the edge, play outside and inside. In a sense, he does, but I think he has his own makeup that makes him different as well.
“He’s an intriguing prospect, just watching him for a few days, he looks promising. Can’t wait to see where he ends up.”
The younger Williams is set to face off with the left tackle frequently during training camp. After missing camp in 2024 and only appearing in 10 games, the veteran is well-rested, “feeling great” and ready for the challenge.
Bosa, who regularly is seen having in-depth conversations with Trent Williams after games, noted that working with the All-Pro tackle has helped his game tremendously. During rookie minicamp, Mykel, who plans to learn everything he possibly can from Bosa, said that he plans to do the same, using Trent as a resource.
With defensive line coach Kris Kocurek as his position coach and Bosa as a mentor, Trent believes Mykel will have all of the resources he needs at his disposal.
“I think he has a chance to be dominant,” Trent Williams said. “He has the best coach in the league coaching him. Gets to learn from some of the best, from obviously Nick. I’m happy to see how he turns out. I think he has all the tools to be an All-Pro.”
