FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — There’s something different about this year’s Fall Camp.

Just ask returning Fresno State defensive end Korey Foreman.

“It’s almost like ‘survival of the fittest’ type of mode, being physical with no pads,” Foreman said. “It was really competitive. It was really like ‘hoo-rah, ooh-rah.'”

Toughness wins. That’s what new head coach Matt Entz preaches, and the players are listening.

“Really pleased with how we operated,” Entz said after the Bulldogs’ opening practice Thursday.

“That’s the first time since I’ve been here that we were able to complete all our scripts. That tells me we’re getting in and out of the huddle. We’re operating at a higher level. We’re just getting better.”

Who leads the huddle is yet to be decided.

Rice transfer E.J. Warner is back from spring camp, which gives him a leg up on Sac State transfer quarterback Carson Conklin, who made the move down Highway 99 in late May.

But it’s not just between E.J. and Carson for QB1.

“Jayden Mandal is right there with them, too,” Entz said.

So does that mean it’s a 3-man race to be Fresno State’s starting quarterback?

Entz’s answer: “I think so. Let’s make it real exciting.”

Speaking of exciting, the running back room made a “speedy” addition on the first day of Fall Camp.

Coming back from a torn meniscus, Arizona transfer Rayshon “Speedy” Luke is ready to make his name known in Fresno.

The origin of his nickname was his late Pop Warner coach.

“Going back to when I was 7 years old, my first practice ever, [he] was like, ‘We need to find you a nickname, because there are too many guys on the team,'” Luke said. “I’m 21 now, so it’s stuck for a while.”

Not everyone is new, like Visalia native Bryson Donelson, who carries a lot of expectations on his shoulders after a breakout freshman season.

But he’s shaking them off, like a linebacker trying to tackle him.

“I have nothing to prove to nobody. I prove it to myself, and hopefully it pays off,” Donelson said.

The running back room is deep, the quarterback battle is fierce, and the players eat, sleep, and breathe football.

“I fall asleep studying football, do it all day long,” Warner said. “When I go home [or] call home, I talk football. It’s what I do. It relaxes me.”

And these are just some of the storylines in what promises to be a fascinating Fall Camp.

“I’m excited about Day 1,” Entz said. “All I care about is we gotta win each day. If we can go 1-0 every day, stack a bunch of good days, we’ll have an opportunity to be competitive.”

*NOTE – Carson Conklin was not available to the media on Thursday. However, he will be available this weekend to share his thoughts on the QB competition.
