A former Miami Dolphins first-round pick is suddenly out of a job.

The Las Vegas Raiders cut defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, the team announced via statement late Thursday evening. A longstanding disagreement about how to handle the 29-year-old’s fractured foot led to the move, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“We have decided that it is in the best interests of the organization to move on from Christian Wilkins and he has been informed of his release from the team,” the Raiders said in a statement. “This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field. With no clear path or plan for future return to play from Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season.”

This comes just one year after Wilkins spurned the Dolphins in favor of a a four-year, $110 million deal with the Raiders. Five games into the 2024 season, however, the defensive tackle sustained a Jones fracture in his left foot. That’s when the issue began as the sides clashed about whether Wilkins required another surgery, according to ESPN’s Ryan McFadden.

Although Wilkins was initially present at voluntary team activities during the offseason, he did not participate in any drills. Raiders coach Pete Carroll called the former Clemson standout’s recovery process “challenging” at the time.

“He’s not ready to get back out and we’re in the midst of a long, challenging process,” Carroll said in May. “Fortunately there’s a lot of time and we’re gonna take every bit of it. We’re really trying to be really diligent.”

A messy legal dispute looms on the horizon. The Raiders apparently wanted Wilkins to undergo another surgery. When Wilkins refused, the team voided the remaining $35.2 million in guaranteed money on his contract due to “failure to maintain his physical condition to play,” according to McFadden.

Wilkins subsequently asked the NFLPA to file a grievance on his behalf. The union did so Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Miami drafted Wilkins with the No. 13 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played five seasons in the aqua and orange, starting 77 of a potential 81 games. As a Dolphin, he racked up 355 total tackles, 20.5 sacks and 50 quarterback hits.

Wilkins added 17 tackles, two sacks and six quarterback hits during his brief tenure in Las Vegas.

What comes next for Wilkins is unclear. At just 29, he’s certainly somewhat young enough for a team to take a chance on him. Still, the uncertainty surrounding his foot — and, frankly, his wage dispute — could likely yield to some hesitancy.

This is a developing story that will be updated shortly.
