GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers held another training camp practice on Friday in Green Bay.
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Matthew Golden would love to make an impact as a rookie, either on offense or special teams.
“I always got that confidence in myself,” said Golden. “Whatever the coaches need me to do, that’s what I’m willing to do. I always got the mindset to go get it, get better each and every day. And then whatever opportunities I do get, I’m going to make the most of them.”
Golden’s speed is a weapon. He was asked when he first realized he had that advantage.
“I would say I used to stay in these apartments [in Texas] and Greenspoint at my grandma’s,” said Golden. “We used to have these little races in the back. And, I mean, everybody was racing. I was the youngest one out there. You know, I was always winning. So, I kind of knew I was going to be fast growing up, you know, and now it’s just already there.”
“He’s definitely not afraid of hard work,” said Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur. “He cares about the game. He’s going to put the time in and he’s going to be dedicated. And now it’s fun. We get to the football and it’ll be great just to watch him when we get the pads on, when we go to practice against other teams or playing in those preseason games. There’s a lot of competition in that room. So those guys are going to have to fight for all those opportunities.”
Golden said when he’s not on the field, he’s in the playbook.
“Our offense is not easy,” said Golden. “Just being in the offense, studying as much as I can. I’m trying to get my feet up under me, learning the playbook as fast as I can, so I can just go out there and have fun. It will get to the point where I don’t have to think when I’m out there on the field. The faster that can happen for me, the faster and more success I have on the field.”
Packers leadership said they also see that potential for success from him.
“We think he’s got a chance to certainly make an impact for our football team,” said Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst. “I think it’s going to be a competitive group. But, we took him for a reason.”
Packers legend Jordy Nelson and Marquette University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Shaka Smart were among the guests watching practice Friday. The Packers will have Saturday off and practice for the first time in pads on Sunday.
