Raiders Have “More Impressive” Secondary Than Legendary Seahawks Group originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll has developed a reputation as a defensive back guru throughout his 18-year tenure as an NFL head coach. His “Legion of Boom” defenses with the Seattle Seahawks helped the franchise win a Super Bowl.

On Tuesday, Carroll spoke to the media in Las Vegas before training camp began for the Raiders. Surprisingly, he made a comparison between those legendary defenses and what the Silver and Black currently have on the roster.
“I’m fired up about the back end. We’re really athletic, we’re really fast, and we’re big. It’s an impressive-looking group,” Carroll said. “I can’t remember ever having a group that looks more impressive than this group. My guys will be pissed at me because I said that; the old guys. But it’s the truth. These guys are big and fast, and really hungry to make a mark.”

The Seahawks’ defense was headlined by stars like Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor, both of whom were All-Pro players for Seattle. It also featured players like Earl Thomas, Byron Maxwell and Brandon Browner.
Las Vegas does not have the level of established talent that the Seahawks did, but the Raiders’ group has been created in the image of the Legion of Boom. The unit consists of tall, long-armed players who are fast and physical.
Starting safeties Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Pola-Mao fit this description, as do expected starting cornerbacks Eric Stokes and third-round rookie Darien Porter. Even backups like Decamerion Richardson and Lonnie Johnson Jr. fit the mold Carroll sees in a defensive back.

There is certainly reason for optimism in Las Vegas for the upcoming season, especially after Carroll’s comparison between this Raiders group and that of a Super Bowl-winning unit.
