DARIEN, Ga. (WTOC) – The Buccaneers were able to flip their record from 4-7 in 2023 to 7-4 in 2024. And now this year, they’re hoping to continue making strides forward.
Continued growth might be a bit of a challenge, though, considering McIntosh County graduated 18 seniors this past year, and there are holes that need to be filled.
It seems like those pieces are starting to come together. Two aspects of the game that stand out right now for head coach Bradley Warren’s team are the run game and the defensive line. According to Warren, that’s where he sees his guys shining. However, he’s still hoping to be able to find a little more depth at all positions.
“I’m pretty pleased with the core group right now. Filling in those little puzzle pieces around that core, that’s going to be a project probably all the way through the first couple weeks of the season.”
In addition to depth, Warren said he’s also looking for some of his players to step up and take on leadership roles. That’s something him and the coaching staff are constantly talking to the team about because they know how much of a difference it can make come game time and the impact it can have on their results come the end of the year.
“We’re seeing some guys emerge as leaders, but it’s not consistent,” said Warren. “We’re seeing some either really good leadership and they’ll do it for a week or two, three weeks and then have an unexcused absence or something like that. That just comes with growing up. I’m not mad at them or anything. We just have to grow up and I think this is going to help us.”
The Bucs begin their season at home against Islands on August 15. Charlton County will be their opponent the following week, and from there on out, it’s all region games on the schedule.
