Following Saturday’s training camp practice, the fourth for the Indianapolis Colts, head coach Shane Steichen discussed where he has seen growth in quarterback Anthony Richardson.

“I think being in Year 3 of the system,” Steichen said, “just the operation at the line of scrimmage is good. When you’re going into Year 3, you should be pretty good at the line of scrimmage–operating, calling plays in and out of the huddle, he’s been really well doing that.”

As Steichen has said on a few occasions, consistency is what he’s looking for at quarterback, and whoever provides that best will be the Week 1 starter.

Getting in and out of the huddle and the pre-snap operating are key elements to that. Passing game coordinator Alex Tanney recently highlighted other aspects that the coaching staff will be evaluating as well.

“It’s quite a few things,” Tanney said, via Locked on Colts. “It’s command of the offense and the huddle. It’s command of the line of scrimmage–if you have multiple plays called, getting us in and out of the right play. Moving guys pre-snap, snapping things at the right time, and then making good decisions with the football, and being the leader of the offense. It’s all-encompassing. There’s a lot of things that go into it.”

Then, of course, there is the ability to complete passes. A priority for Richardson this entire offseason has been on short to intermediate throws. While the downfield throws are great, it’s those short to intermediate throws that move the sticks and keep the offense on the field.

To find more accuracy on those attempts, footwork has been a priority for Richardson. At the quarterback position, that is where proper mechanics begin.

While Friday was considered by many to be Richardson’s “best” practice, he, as well as Daniel Jones, and the Colts‘ offense struggled on Saturday.
