The Buffalo Bills knew they needed to make major changes on the defensive side of the ball going into the offseason.

After another playoff loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bills focused their efforts on the defensive side in free agency with the signing of Joey Bosa and Tre’Davious White. They also attacked it during the draft by using six of their nine picks on defensive players.

Because of all the infusion of talent, there’s one player who may be on thin ice with the organization.

Former second-round pick A.J. Epenesa is in the final year of his deal with the Bills and is looking for a new contract. He has recorded six sacks in each of the last three seasons. But with Arkansas edge Landon Jackson drafted in the third round, coupled with all the other additions on defense, Epenesa’s time may be running out.

Pro Football Network’s Sterling Xie is clear with that thought as well.

“Now entering a contract year, Epenesa is in a far more crowded edge rusher room. The Bills signed Joey Bosa and Michael Hoecht in free agency, while drafting a very similar player in Landon Jackson in the third round,” Xie wrote. “Jackson doesn’t have the most natural bend, but is an explosive and strong athlete who could replicate some of Epenesa’s three-down value.

“You can never have enough pass rushers, but if Buffalo adds another edge rusher like Von Miller, Epenesa would be a sneaky trade candidate.”

Epenesa can very well earn playing time going into the 2025 season and not be moved. That has always been the mantra for the Bills since Sean McDermott became head coach.

But it appears Epenesa’s role on the team is at least a bit more up in the air.

And that alone makes him expendable going into 2025.
