Very strong endorsement from Josh Hines-Allen for sixth-year DT DaVon Hamilton, who has flashed through first few days of camp almost 2 years after being sidelined with spinal chord abscess

Following Sunday’s training camp practice, Jacksonville Jaguars‘ defensive end Josh Hines-Allen had some very high praise for defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton.
“He’s the best nose (tackle) in the game,” Hines-Allen said. “D-Ham is the best defensive nose, tackle, whatever you want to identify him in the NFL right now. And he’s showing it and proving it every single day. When you know you have that confidence, that they’re not going to run the ball right here, now everybody else has to pick their level up.”
Hamilton’s numbers against the run last season show a player who was one of the best at his position group in that phase of the game. According to PFF’s tracking data, Hamilton finished fifth among all interior defensive linemen in tackles against the run, he was tied for fourth in stops, and he was second in run stop rate.
As a run-stuffing presence, Hamilton isn’t always going to be the player who fills the stat sheet. In terms of pressures last season, which often garners the attention, Hamilton had just 16. However, that isn’t necessarily what he’s been asked to do either.
As a run defender, Hamilton’s job is to obviously tackle the ball carrier if he comes his way, but also a big part of that role is occupying space, taking on double-teams, and generating a quick push.
Those are elements that don’t fill up the stat sheet, but when a player along the interior is doing those things at a high level, every single one of his teammates around him benefits.
The thought during the offseason was that GM James Gladstone was going to add to the defensive tackle position, whether it be in free agency, the NFL draft, or both. However, that never happened, showcasing the confidence he has in those on the roster, including Hamilton, and the confidence he has in Anthony Campanile’s defensive scheme, which will bring a more attacking play-style up front.
“Again,” Hines-Allen added, “DaVon Hamilton is the best nose in the game, and he’s going to prove it, and I can’t wait to be out there to support him after every play he makes.”
