SANTA CLARA — The 49ers’ depth at cornerback is already being tested.

Second-year player Renardo Green is expected to miss at least two weeks of practice due to a hamstring injury that he sustained on Friday.

Tre Brown and Darrell Luter Jr. are next in line. Brown signed with the 49ers as a free agent after four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Luter was a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft who is seeking an increased role this season.

“With Renardo down, that third corner spot is wide open,” 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said on Monday. “So everyone is going to get a turn, everyone is going to get a shot at it.”

Brown saw extensive action at nickel back before Green’s injury. Now, rookie defensive back Upton Stout is seeing more time with the first-team defense, and he is taking advantage of his opportunities.

Stout made an exceptional play at the right sideline to break up a Brock Purdy pass intended for wide receiver Ricky Pearsall.

It was one of several stellar plays from the defense during the 49ers’ first padded practice of training camp.

Stout, a third-round draft pick from Western Kentucky, has impressed the coaching staff. And Saleh said they are striking the balance of putting more — but not too much — on his plate.

“He’s a sharp kid. It’s definitely not too big for him,” Saleh said of Stout. “We’ve got to be careful as a coaching staff. You still have to slow-play it, regardless of how smart you feel like they are. There’s still a lot of things they’re still learning. You want to push the envelope, but never too far so he can’t execute his job.”

He has also made his presence felt among the veteran players, including safety Jason Pinnock, who signed with the 49ers as a free agent after two seasons as a starter with the New York Giants.

“Stout’s a dog,” Pinnock said.

Here are other notes and observations from 49ers practice on Monday:

— Wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who exited practice Sunday with a calf injury, did not take part in any on-field work. His status is uncertain.

— Rookie defensive tackle C.J. West put together several strong rushes during one-on-one sessions, which caught Saleh’s eye. He beat 49ers right guard Dominick Puni with an impressive speed move to the inside, and also fashioned a powerful bull rush. West was a fourth-round pick and is expected to earn a spot in the team’s defensive line rotation.

“He’s like a little fire hydrant,” Saleh said. “He’s powerful. He’s got heavy hands. He’ll be fine.”

— New daddy Brock Purdy had a difficult time going against the 49ers’ first-team defense. He completed just eight of 17 passes, including one throw that was intercepted on a deflection. Pinnock broke up Purdy’s pass intended for George Kittle. The ball deflected to linebacker Dee Winters, who came up with the takeaway.

— Linebacker Fred Warner allowed Demarcus Robinson to catch a pass from Purdy over the top. On the next play, Warner batted down a Purdy pass attempt at the line of scrimmage.

— One of the better matchups occurred later when Purdy escaped pressure from Nick Bosa, rolled to his left and found fullback Kyle Juszczyk deep down the field. Juszczyk said he figured he was wide open, but Warner flashed his unique closing speed to turn it into a contest ball. Juszcyzk made the leaping catch but the official on that side ruled him out of bounds.

— Purdy and Kittle hooked up early in practice on a pass along the right sideline. Kittle turned upfield and warded off a couple of defenders as he took it into the end zone toward the cheering fans for a long touchdown.

— Pearsall had two receptions, including a sliding catch on a crossing route that took him all the way from the left side of the field to a spot beyond the right hashmark.

— Undrafted rookie cornerback Jakob Robinson broke up a Tanner Mordecai pass intended for veteran Russell Gate on a deep-out pattern.

— Gage continued his impressive camp as he made a nice grab of a Purdy pass along the sideline against Brown’s tight coverage.

— Winters made his presence felt early in practice when he leveled running back Isaac Guerendo with a hard hit on a running play.

— Rookie running back Jordan James showed his ability to get deep on a wheel route and hauled in a pass from Mordecai against the coverage of linebacker Stone Blanton.

— Defensive lineman Tarron Jackson, who was injured during Sunday’s practice and transported to a local hospital, was discharged from the hospital later in the evening, according to the team.

He was at the 49ers’ practice facility on Monday, as the team’s medical staff continued to evaluate his condition after the apparent injury to his head/neck area.

— Newly added receiver Equanimeous St. Brown had three catches on throws from backup quarterback Mac Jones, who was 13 of 16 on the day.

— Wide receiver Quintez Cephus’ stay with the team was a short one. The 49ers released Cephus, who signed with the club on Thursday, to make room for veteran cornerback Eli Apple’s arrival. Apple, a 2016 first-round draft pick, signed a one-year contract. He has played for six teams in nine seasons.
