SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills are through five practices of their open training camp at St. John Fisher University.

Here are five key takeaways from the first five days.

Day One: James Cook bleeds blue

Bills running-back James Cook has had a lot of drama circling him this offseason.

The 25 year-old star is seeking a pricey contract extension with the team after a very successful third season.

Last season Cook was tied for the most rushing touchdowns in the league with 16 and had over 1,000 rushing yards, making him one of the elite backs in the NFL.

It was questionable if he was going to practice with the team while these contract disputes were going on, but Cook surprised fans and media by running drills with the team.

After the practice, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane spoke about Cook practicing.

“I’m hopeful when we’re sitting here at next year’s training camp that James Cook is out there practicing and still representing the red, white and blue,” he said.

The theme of day one was that James Cook wants to stay with the Bills and wants to compete with his teammates, but it’ll cost the Bills to keep him.

Day Two: All eyes on the Bills

The team was selected to be on the HBO football series ‘Hard Knocks’ for their football practices leading up to the regular season.

The show gives fans a closer look into a team’s organization and how players live their lives outside of football.

So far the Bills have had several cameras recording their open training camps.

Star quarterback Josh Allen said he felt nervous wearing a microphone and is making sure he cleans up his language for the families watching at home.

The first episode of the series will air on HBO Max on August 5th.

Day Three: Tre’Davious White is back

Former All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White is back practicing in blue.

The veteran missed last season with the Bills after being cut by the team in the 2024 offseason.

After the financial decision to cut White that saved the Bills over $10 million dollars in salary cap space, White signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

He was then traded to the Baltimore Ravens where he finished his season with a loss to Buffalo in the AFC Divisional Playoff Game.

Currently, White is competing for a starting role against the first round pick, Maxwell Hairston.

The Bills 2017 first round pick challenging the team’s 2025 first round pick is a battle fans should keep their eyes on as camp progresses.

Day Four: Joey Bosa has arrived

The Bills made a splash in free agency, signing veteran edge rusher Joey Bosa.

The former Los Angeles Charger has several accolades including five Pro Bowls and was the 2016 defensive rookie of the year.

Bosa has missed 23 games in the last three seasons, which led to the Chargers releasing him.

The Bills signed Bosa to a one-year contract to help bring in some experience into a young defensive line.

During practice, Bosa told reporters, “here in Buffalo the guys – hang out with each other and I’ve probably hung out outside of football more with these guys in the past 6 weeks – then maybe my entire career.”

Day Five: Key breakouts and injuries

Bills open training camp at St. John Fisher University is halfway done and there has been a lot of buzz around injuries and players performing well.

Some players that haven’t practiced every day include offensive tackle Spencer Brown, wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Elijah Moore, tight ends Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid, and linebacker Terrell Bernard.

All of these injuries are minor and all players are expected to be healthy in time for Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

The biggest breakout player through camp so far has been wide receiver Keon Coleman.

The second-year wide receiver has been making eye-catching catches in camp

Last year, Coleman had 556 receiving yards along with four receiving touchdowns.

Some other players who have performed well at practice include cornerback Christian Benford and defensive end Greg Rousseau.
