NEW YORK (TNND) — Five people, including a New York Police Department officer, were killed near the corporate offices of the National Football League and Blackstone Monday evening.

“Five innocent people shot tonight, we lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during a press conference Monday night.

Six people in total were shot, including the perpetrator. A civilian was injured during the shooting and remains in critical condition, according to the Mayor.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch posted to X, saying that the “lone shooter has been neutralized,” and that the scene is contained.

The suspected gunman is Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas. Tamura has an expired private investigator license, CNN reports. The suspect has no notable criminal background. He had a ‘documented mental health history,’ but the motive is still unknown, police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.

Law enforcement officials found the suspect with a concealed carry permit for a handgun from Las Vegas.

Tamura traveled from Las Vegas through Colorado on July 26, according to Tisch. He was most recently seen in New Jersey around 4:30pm on Monday, with his car entering New York City soon after.

Police said that the man was walking around the office building in Midtown Manhattan and had a long rifle.

Police say the gunman shot himself in the chest with his M4 assault rifle, dying from the self-inflicted wound. According to Commissioner Tisch, he shot one person on the 33rd floor of the building before shooting himself in the chest.

The NYPD officer was reportedly shot in the back and did not make it, along with three others, CNN reports. The officer was off duty while in the building, working as a security detail.

According to Adams, the officer killed was Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old from Bangladesh.

Islam had been with the NYPD for 3 and a half years.

“He loved this city and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person,” Mayor Adams said.

Tisch said that Tamura shot several people in the building, then went up an elevator. Tamura let a woman exit the elevator unharmed before he went up to the higher floors of the building.

The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building Monday evening for a report of someone shot. A spokesperson said the call came in around 6:30 p.m. but provided no other details. Police provided no additional information.

Local TV footage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads. The building includes offices of Blackstone, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan and consulate general of Ireland.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino posted on X, saying that the FBI is “responding to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan.”

In another post, Bongino said that the FBI is on the scene, with “motive currently under investigation.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also posted to X, confirming the active shooter situation.

“New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”

In another post, Adams posted a video outside the scene, saying that he was headed to the hospital to visit those who are injured.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul posted to X, saying that she had been briefed on the situation, asking New Yorkers to avoid the area.

New York Lawmakers have posted their reactions to the shooting, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries writing on the social media platform, X, “Deeply disturbed by the horrific shooting in Midtown Manhattan. Praying hard for the brave NYPD officer impacted and all other victims of this tragedy. May God watch over our city during this challenging moment.”

Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer thanks first responders, saying that he was “praying for everyone affected.”

Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said that her team was “closely monitoring the shooting” and she was “praying for our first responders and everyone at the scene.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis posted to X, saying, “We are heartbroken to learn that five individuals, including an NYPD officer, were murdered tonight by a madman in Manhattan.”

Rep. Nick LaLota wrote on X, “God Bless the NYPD” with a picture of an NYPD patch.

KPMG US, one of the companies located inside the building, gave a statement on the shooting, saying, “Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement.”

Tisch said there is no longer an active threat to the public during the press conference.
