The Illustrious Career of Joey Porter Sr.

Joey Porter Sr. was picked up by the Steelers in the 1999 NFL draft. Since then, he started making a name for himself and helped the team win more accolades till 2006. Per the franchise website, Porter Sr. was the heart and soul of the defense during his eight seasons with the Steelers. He always brought energy and tenacity to the field.

Though he was later with the Miami Dolphins (from 2007 to 09) and the Arizona Cardinals (from 2009 to 11), Joey Porter Sr. admitted multiple times that his heart has always beat for the gold and black jersey. Recalling that moment, he said, “It meant everything to play for the Steelers… I used to watch the Steelers when I was younger. I watched all those guys. Once I got here, some of those guys were still in the locker room, and that was amazing too. I loved it here.”

After retiring in 2011, Senior started his coaching career with Colorado State in 2013, before being a defensive assistant for the Steelers in 2014. He then got his extension by taking the job of outside linebacker coach from 2015 to 2018. But he couldn’t coach his son, Joey Porter Jr, in the Steelers as the latter was drafted in the 2023 NFL draft. But in June 2025, Porter Sr. confessed to the media that he wants to coach the team again. Though the Steelers didn’t respond to it, they have celebrated his contribution to the franchise by inducting him to the Hall of Honor Class of 2025.
