RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks fell short of the playoffs last season, but expectations are much higher as head coach Mike Macdonald begins his second year at the helm.
Despite posting a winning record in 2024, Macdonald believes the team has the potential to reach another level in 2025 — especially with key returners and some new additions on the roster.
“Our expectations can’t be any higher than what we expect from ourselves,” Macdonald said. “Yeah, we want to win the championship, but in order to do that, we have to become a championship team. We have to become the team that we’re trying to be.”
Macdonald emphasized that building a contender won’t happen overnight. He said the process will require full commitment from players, coaches and staff throughout the preseason and beyond.
“There’s so many things that need to happen between now and when we kick it off,” he said. “But that’s why every day is so critical. You can’t skip steps.”
Training camp reps will be especially valuable in helping the Seahawks build chemistry — something Macdonald said began developing back in the spring.
“I think the guys feel it. They feel the confidence,” he said. “Offensively, I think we almost had 100% participation the whole time. You can feel the execution right now compared to the first day of the spring.”
Defensively, Macdonald noted that while the unit was on a slightly different timeline, the group is already showing signs of cohesion.
“You feel the connectedness with the guys, and that’s really important — especially on defense,” he said. “You’ve got to play off each other. A lot of chemistry is necessary to play good defense.”
As the team continues camp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, the countdown is on to the preseason opener at Lumen Field — and a new era of Seahawks football.
