South Carolina native leaves NFL training camp in ambulance after scary injury

  • July 29, 2025

SAN FRANCISCO (WBTV) – A South Carolina native and former Panthers player was reportedly taken away by an ambulance after he got hurt at an NFL training camp practice this past weekend.

ESPN reported that the player, defensive end Tarron Jackson, was taken from the San Francisco 49ers’ practice on Sunday, July 27 after he went down during a run play and was briefly motionless.

After Jackson went down, ESPN reported that his 49ers teammates quickly called for medical personnel before he was taken off the field on a stretcher, then was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Stanford Hospital.

ESPN said he was released from the hospital Sunday night and was back in the 49ers’ facility by Monday but was still being monitored.

During a press conference after Sunday’s practice, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said it is “always scary” to see a player leave the field on a stretcher but said Jackson was conscious and had movement in all extremities by the time he was taken away.

“It’s never good. You’ve just got to pray for the best in situations like that,” former Panthers and current 49ers star Christian McCaffrey said of Jackson’s injury. “It’s definitely a reminder not to take any day for granted. You’re in a non-padded practice and dudes are getting carted off. It’s a serious sport … just pray for the best for him.”

A native of Aiken, S.C., Jackson played four seasons of college football at Coastal Carolina before the Philadelphia Eagles took him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The 27-year-old joined his hometown Panthers in 2024. He played in three games for Carolina but did not record a tackle.

Jackson was waived by the Panthers after a Week 6 loss to Atlanta, and then rejoined the Eagles on their practice squad before the 49ers signed him this offseason.

ESPN said Jackson had been working mostly with the third-string defense during training camp, meaning he will likely be battling for a roster spot during camp and preseason games.
