ASHBURN, Va. (7News) — It’s no secret, to get past the Philadelphia Eagles this season, the Washington Commanders have to win the battle of the trenches.

Through six practices at training camp, the big boys on the Commanders’ defensive and offensive lines have been getting after it.

Daron Payne has been a staple of the Washington defensive line. Entering his 8th NFL season, Payne has been with Washington since 2018.

It’s a big season for the defensive tackle.

7News Sports Director Scott Abraham sat down with Payne after Tuesday’s practice. One of the big topics of their conversation was Payne’s focus on the upcoming season.

“I’m just playing ball. Right now, I’m at a point of my career where I’m just having fun,” Payne told Abraham. “Everything I do is fun to me. Working hard, being out here in the sun, playing with these guys. It’s fun, just grinding.”

Payne went through a similar situation in 2022. Contract year, looking for a new deal. He responded with a career-high 11.5 sacks, earning a four-year extension worth up to $90 million.

Over the past two seasons, Payne has combined for eight sacks.

However, stats aren’t the end-all be-all for defensive guys that play inside. You have to remember, Payne faces double teams on almost every drive.

He is hungry and focused on a big 2025 season with the Burgundy and Gold.

“Just love the game. I don’t know what I would be doing if I wasn’t here,” Payne said. “When I wake up, there’s nothing else I would be doing. I just dedicate everything I can to this.”

Payne and the rest of his Commanders teammates will have the day off on Wednesday. The team returns to the practice field on Thursday for their seventh training camp practice. Their preseason opener is scheduled for Friday, August 8th in New England.
