NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Tennessee Titans practiced in pads for the first time this summer on Tuesday morning at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park.
The defense arguably won the day over the offense, forcing four turnovers, three of which were interceptions.
However, putting the pads on marked an important step for the Titans in their preseason program, in ramping up the physicality for players and expanding the evaluation lens for coaches.
“How we come off the ball, how we work in combination together with all the different combination blocks that happen up front, just see what those actually get to look like when we can really come off the ball the right way,” Titans head coach Brian Callahan said of adding pads. “Anytime you’re not in pads, you’re mindful of that banging back and forth, so we get to go now, the governors are off and we can come off the football and all those things are a part of the process. But excited to be able to see it happen for real, finally.”

Players have a similar outlook in the way they were able to take a more game-like approach to Tuesday’s practice.
“Being able to get back in pads, now I can really work on my power move, setting up all my finesse moves,” Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons said. “So it felt good, the energy was great.”
“It’s a lot of excitement, put pads on, it’s a different phase,” Titans running back Tyjae Spears said. “We go through the acclimation phase of OTAs and then training camp. Now, I don’t want to say it’s where it gets real at, but now we’re working our details. We got to be detailed, efficient, and see how it is and see how it looks all together.”
The Titans will hold their next open training camp session on Wednesday morning.
