The Colts signed defensive tackle Josh Tupou to a deal Monday as a corresponding move to placing offensive tackle Jack Wilson on injured reserve.

Tupou, a 31-year-old who went undrafted out of Colorado in 2017, has a connection to the Colts, as he spent the first six years of his career in Cincinnati, four of which he played for current Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Anarumo spoke Tuesday about what Tupou can add to the defense.

“Josh is one of those glue guys,” he said. “Great locker room guy…anchors the middle of the (defensive) line, really powerful.”

Tupou has spent the majority of his career as a depth piece. In 68 appearances, he made 23 starts between the Bengals and last season with the Ravens. His career stat line is not very eye-popping either, with only 3.0 sacks and 7 tackles for loss to his name.

Still, Anarumo likes the person Tupou is and wants to give him a chance to earn a roster spot in training camp. He faces an uphill climb. Grover Stewart and DeForest Buckner are locked in as starters with Neville Gallimore set to be next up in the rotation. Adetomiwa Adebawore, who’s had a good offseason, should also be in the mix.

For Tupou to make the roster, he’ll have to really turn some heads quickly. That said, his character could make him a practice squad candidate if things go well.
